Calls to action that people actually click

By Alex DraguGetting more inquiries12 min read

Okay, let’s talk Call-to-Actions (CTAs). Sounds kinda techy and marketing-speak-ish, right? But trust me, if you want your blog to do more than just sit there looking pretty, you need to become a CTA master.

Think of your blog like a friendly tour guide. You’re showing people around, pointing out cool stuff, and sharing your expertise. But at the end of the tour, you don’t just want to wave goodbye and hope they remember you, do you? Nope! You want to invite them to take the next step – to actually do something that benefits both them and your business. That’s where the magic of a Call-to-Action comes in.

So, let’s get into how to craft CTAs that don’t just sit there like wallflowers, but actually get your blog readers clicking, engaging, and turning into happy customers.

Call-to-Action 101: It’s Like a Friendly Nudge, Not a Pushy Shove

First things first, what exactly is a Call-to-Action? In simple terms, it’s an instruction. It tells your blog readers what you want them to do next. Think of it as a signpost on your blog-tour, guiding people in the right direction.

A weak CTA is like a whisper in a crowded room. A strong CTA? That’s a clear, confident invitation that makes people want to say “Yes, tell me more!”

Why are CTAs so important in your blog posts?

  • Turn Readers into… Well, Something More: People land on your blog for a reason – they’re interested in what you have to say. But reading a blog post is often a passive activity. CTAs are what turn passive readers into active participants in your business world. They move people from just consuming content to actually engaging with you.
  • Guide the Journey: Think of the customer journey like a path. Your blog post is one stop along that path. A well-placed CTA helps readers take the next step on that journey, whether it’s learning more about your services, signing up for your email list, or requesting a consultation. Without a CTA, it’s like the path just… ends, and people wander off in different directions.
  • Measure Your Blog’s Real Impact: Vanity metrics like page views are nice, but they don’t pay the bills. CTAs help you measure what really matters – conversions. Are people actually taking action after reading your blog? Are they becoming leads, prospects, or customers? Tracking CTA clicks and conversions gives you real data on your blog’s effectiveness.

Cracking the Code: Key Ingredients of CTAs That Convert

Alright, so CTAs are important. Got it. But how do you make them actually work? It’s not just about slapping a button that says “Click Here!” and hoping for the best. Crafting effective CTAs is a bit of an art and a bit of a science. Here are the key ingredients:

1. Clarity is Queen (and King!): Tell People Exactly What You Want Them To Do

Confusion is the enemy of conversion. If your CTA is vague or unclear, people will just shrug and move on. Your CTA should be crystal clear about what happens when someone clicks.

Instead of: “Learn More” (Learn more about what exactly?)

Try:

  • “Download Your Free Website Security Checklist”
  • “Get a Free HVAC Marketing Consultation”
  • Watch a Demo of Our Social Media Management Tool

See the difference? The “Try” examples are specific and tell the reader exactly what they’ll get or what will happen next.

Pro-Tip: Start your CTA with a strong action verb that tells people what to do. Think verbs like: “Download,” “Get,” “Watch,” “Start,” “Book,” “Request,” “Explore,” “Discover.”

2. Value, Value, Value: What’s In It For Them?

People are naturally tuned into WIIFM radio – “What’s In It For Me?” Your CTA needs to answer that question loud and clear. Why should someone click your CTA? What benefit will they get?

Focus on the value you’re offering, not just the action you want them to take.

Instead of: “Sign Up” (Sign up for what? Another random email list?)

Try:

  • “Sign Up for Our Weekly Web Design Tips and Get a Free Website Audit Guide”
  • Join Our Newsletter and Stay Ahead of the Digital Marketing Curve
  • “Subscribe for Exclusive Content and Special Offers”

Again, the “Try” examples highlight the benefit of signing up – valuable tips, staying ahead, exclusive content. People are more likely to take action when they know they’re getting something worthwhile in return.

3. Make it Pop: Visual Appeal and Placement

Your CTA shouldn’t be hiding in the digital shadows. It needs to stand out visually and be placed where people are most likely to see it.

Visual Appeal:

  • Use Buttons: Buttons are naturally clickable. They visually signal “Hey, click me!” Make your CTA buttons distinct from the surrounding text and design.
  • Color Contrast: Use colors that contrast with your website’s background and surrounding elements to make your CTA button visually pop. Think about using brand-consistent but attention-grabbing colors.
  • Whitespace is Your Friend: Give your CTA button some breathing room. Whitespace around the CTA helps it stand out and draws the eye.
  • Keep it Concise: While clarity is key, keep the text on your CTA button relatively short and punchy. Long, wordy CTAs can be overwhelming.

Placement Power:

  • Natural Flow: Place CTAs where they logically fit within your blog post. Think about the reader’s journey through the content. Where would it make sense for them to take the next step?
  • Strategic Spots: Common effective CTA placements include:
    • At the End of the Blog Post: After someone has finished reading, they’re often primed for the next step. This is a classic and effective placement.
    • Within the Content (Contextual CTAs): If you mention a specific service or topic in your blog post, place a CTA related to that topic right there. For example, if you’re talking about website security, a CTA for a website security audit makes perfect sense within that section.
    • Sidebar or Footer: These are more persistent placements that keep your CTA visible throughout the blog post, without being too intrusive.
    • Pop-ups (Use Sparingly and Wisely): Pop-up CTAs can be effective, but use them carefully. Aggressive pop-ups can be annoying and hurt user experience. Consider exit-intent pop-ups (that appear when someone is about to leave the page) or timed pop-ups that appear after someone has spent a certain amount of time on the page.

4. A Dash of Urgency (Use with Caution!)

Urgency can be a powerful motivator, but use it like a spice – a little goes a long way, and too much can ruin the dish. Creating a sense of urgency can encourage people to act now rather than putting it off.

When to use urgency:

  • Limited-Time Offers: If you have a special promotion or offer that’s expiring soon, urgency is perfect. “Limited-Time Offer! Get 20% Off Web Design Services This Week Only!”
  • Limited Availability: If you have limited spots available for consultations or services, you can use urgency to encourage prompt action. “Only 5 Spots Left for Free Website Audits This Month!”

How to create urgency (without being cheesy or pushy):

  • Use Time-Sensitive Language: Phrases like “Limited Time,” “Offer Ends Soon,” “Don’t Miss Out,” “Today Only.”
  • Quantify the Scarcity: Instead of just saying “limited spots,” say “Only 3 Spots Remaining.” Numbers make it more concrete.
  • Be Genuine: Don’t fake urgency if it’s not real. People can smell fake urgency a mile away, and it will damage your credibility.

Important Note: Overusing urgency can make you sound like a used car salesman. Use it sparingly and only when it’s genuinely applicable. Clarity and value are generally more important than urgency for most blog CTAs.

CTA Menu: Types of Calls-to-Action for Your Blog

Just like there’s a menu of options at your favorite restaurant, there’s a menu of different types of CTAs you can use in your blog posts. The best type of CTA will depend on your blog post’s topic, your overall marketing goals, and where the reader is in their customer journey. Here are some popular and effective CTA types:

  • Lead Magnets (The “Ethical Bribe”): Offer something valuable for free in exchange for the reader’s email address or contact information. This is a classic lead generation tactic.
    • Examples:
      • “Download Your Free Website Security Checklist”
      • “Get Our Ultimate Guide to SEO for Small Businesses”
      • “Grab Your Free Social Media Content Calendar Template”
    • Best for: Blog posts that provide educational or how-to content. Lead magnets offer a deeper dive into the topic and are a great way to build your email list and nurture leads.
  • Free Trials or Demos (The “Test Drive”): If you offer software or a service that people can try out, a free trial or demo CTA can be very effective.
    • Examples:
      • “Start Your Free 14-Day Trial of Our Website Builder”
      • “Request a Demo of Our Email Marketing Platform”
      • “Sign Up for a Free Website Audit”
    • Best for: Blog posts that introduce your services or products. Free trials and demos allow people to experience the value firsthand.
  • Consultations or Quotes (The “Let’s Talk”): If you offer services that require a more personalized approach (like web design or digital marketing strategy), a CTA to request a consultation or quote is a natural next step.
    • Examples:
      • “Schedule a Free Web Design Consultation”
      • “Get a Custom Digital Marketing Quote”
      • “Talk to a Website Security Expert”
    • Best for: Blog posts that address specific business challenges and position your services as solutions. Consultations and quotes are direct paths to sales conversations.
  • “Learn More” or “Explore Services” (The “Gentle Guide”): Sometimes, you just want to guide readers to explore more of your website and learn about your offerings without a hard sell. “Learn More” or “Explore Services” CTAs are less direct but still encourage engagement.
    • Examples:
      • “Learn More About Our Web Design Services”
      • “Explore Our Digital Marketing Packages”
      • “Discover How We Help Businesses Like Yours”
    • Best for: Blog posts that are more top-of-funnel or informational. These CTAs are good for readers who are still in the research phase.
  • Blog Subscription (The “Stay in Touch”): Building an email list is crucial for long-term marketing. A blog subscription CTA encourages readers to stay connected with your content and your business.
    • Examples:
      • “Subscribe to Our Blog for Weekly Marketing Tips”
      • “Join Our Community and Never Miss a Post”
      • “Get the Latest Web Design Trends Delivered to Your Inbox”
    • Best for: Almost any blog post! Blog subscription CTAs are a consistent way to grow your audience and nurture relationships.

Location, Location, Location: Where to Place Your CTAs for Maximum Impact

We touched on placement earlier, but let’s dive a little deeper. Where you put your CTAs can make a big difference in their effectiveness. It’s like real estate – location, location, location!

  • The End-of-Post Powerhouse: As mentioned, the end of your blog post is prime CTA real estate. Readers who have made it to the end are clearly engaged and interested in the topic. This is a great place for a strong, direct CTA that aligns with the blog post’s content. Use a visually distinct button CTA at the end of each blog post as a standard practice.
  • Contextual CTAs Within the Content: Don’t be afraid to sprinkle CTAs within your blog post, especially when they relate directly to the topic being discussed. If you’re writing about website speed optimization, and you mention your website audit service, include a CTA button right there: “Get a Free Website Speed Audit.” These contextual CTAs are highly relevant and can catch readers in the moment of interest.
  • The Persistent Sidebar (or Footer): A sidebar or footer CTA can be a consistent presence throughout your blog. These are good for more general CTAs, like blog subscriptions, lead magnets, or “learn more” options. They’re always visible but less intrusive than pop-ups.
  • Strategic Pop-ups (Use Wisely, Young Padawan): Pop-ups can be effective for capturing attention, but they can also be annoying if done poorly. Use pop-ups strategically and consider:
    • Exit-Intent Pop-ups: Triggered when someone is about to leave the page. A last-ditch effort to capture their attention before they bounce.
    • Timed Pop-ups: Appear after someone has spent a certain amount of time on the page, indicating they’re likely engaged with the content.
    • Scroll-Based Pop-ups: Triggered after someone has scrolled a certain percentage down the page, showing they’re actively reading.
    • Make them easy to close! A clear and obvious “close” button is essential for good user experience with pop-ups.

Testing, Tweaking, and Triumphing: The Art of CTA Optimization

Crafting effective CTAs isn’t a one-and-done thing. It’s an ongoing process of testing, analyzing, and refining. What works for one audience or blog post might not work for another. That’s where CTA optimization comes in.

A/B Testing is Your Friend:

A/B testing (also called split testing) is like a scientific experiment for your CTAs. You create two versions of a CTA – Version A and Version B – with one element changed (e.g., button color, wording, placement). Then, you show Version A to half of your website visitors and Version B to the other half. You track which version performs better (gets more clicks, conversions, etc.).

What to A/B Test:

  • Wording: Try different action verbs, value propositions, and lengths of text.
  • Button Color: Experiment with different colors to see what stands out best.
  • Button Size and Shape: Test different sizes and shapes to see what gets more attention.
  • Placement: Compare different placements (end of post vs. within content, etc.).
  • Offer: Test different lead magnets or offers to see what resonates most with your audience.

Analyze and Iterate:

  • Track Your Metrics: Use website analytics tools (like Google Analytics) to track your CTA clicks, conversion rates, and other relevant metrics.
  • Look for Patterns: Analyze your A/B testing results to see what’s working and what’s not. Are certain colors performing better? Is one placement outperforming others?
  • Keep Tweaking: Based on your data, make adjustments to your CTAs. Optimization is an ongoing cycle. Even small tweaks can sometimes lead to significant improvements in conversion rates.

Common CTA Calamities: Mistakes to Sidestep

Even seasoned marketers sometimes stumble when it comes to CTAs. Here are some common mistakes to avoid:

  • Being Too Pushy or Salesy: No one likes to feel like they’re being pressured. Avoid CTAs that are overly aggressive or sound like hard sales pitches. Focus on providing value and offering help, not just pushing for a sale.
  • Hiding the CTA: If your CTA is buried at the bottom of a long page in tiny text, no one will see it. Make sure your CTAs are visually prominent and placed strategically.
  • Vague or Unclear CTAs: As we discussed earlier, clarity is crucial. Avoid generic CTAs that don’t tell people exactly what to do or what they’ll get.
  • Ignoring Mobile: Make sure your CTAs are mobile-friendly! Buttons should be easy to tap on touchscreens, and text should be readable on smaller screens. Test your CTAs on mobile devices to ensure they look and function well.
  • Forgetting the Value Proposition: Always answer “What’s in it for me?” If your CTA doesn’t clearly communicate the value of taking action, it will likely fall flat.

Become a CTA Champion!

Mastering the art of the Call-to-Action is a game-changer for your blog and your business. It’s the bridge that connects your valuable content to real-world results. By crafting clear, compelling, and strategically placed CTAs, you can turn your blog from a passive information hub into a powerful lead generation and customer engagement machine.

So, go forth and experiment! Test different CTA types, placements, and wording. Analyze your results, and keep refining your approach. With a little practice and attention, you’ll be crafting CTAs that convert your blog readers into happy, loyal customers in no time.
